Scope
The research of IRST Stuttgart focuses on the modelling of turbulent, reacting multiphase flows. Our key research areas are multiphase flows (both gas/liquid and gas/solid), chemical reactors and nanoparticle processes. Our work is concerned with various aspects of modelling physical and chemical phenomena that occur in these processes, such as turbulence, chemical kinetics (both homogeneous and heterogeneous), diffusion processes, pollutant formation, ignition, phase change and particle/droplet dynamics, agglomeration and growth. A particular focus is on the development of advanced modelling concepts, such as conditional moment closure (CMC), probability density function (PDF) and multiple mapping conditioning (MMC). The new models are employed to describe small scale turbulence-chemistry and turbulence-particulate interactions in the context of large eddy (LES) and direct numerical simulation (DNS).
IRST's research is structured in several key research areas.
